A Brief History of Chrysler Cars

Chrysler boasts a rich history and a longstanding commitment to innovation. As a brand, Chrysler spans more than 90 years of leadership in the automotive industry, and they continue to break new ground as the 21st century unfolds.

Below, Peake in Wayne County looks back at Chrysler's history - starting from its humble beginnings in Detroit. Read on if you're interested in learning more.

Chrysler Beginnings

Walter P. Chrysler founded Chrysler Corporation in 1925. A self-taught engineer, Chrysler got his start in the railroad industry before moving over to Buick, now General Motors.

At Buick, Chrysler nurtured his creativity, hands-on managerial style and passion for engineering. He quickly rose through the ranks to become company president. Chrysler met three ex-Studebaker engineers around that time - Fred Zeder, Owen Skelton, and Carl Breer-and together they designed Chrysler's first car, the Chrysler 6.

The Chrysler 6's 1924 debut marked the dawn of a new era for automotive innovation and the Chrysler brand prospered in the decades that follow. Within the first ten years of its foundation, Chrysler earned a reputation as "Detroit's engineering company". That reputation would follow the Chrysler brand throughout its existence.

Innovation Spanning the Decades

Chryslers were highly competitive throughout the 1930s and 40s, rivaling luxury cars but costing 1/3 as much. Thanks to their affordable designs and reliable engineering, Chryslers were a common sight in places like Sodus, Webster and Wayne County, especially after World War II.

The 1950s were a revolutionary decade for Chrysler, which became a symbol for America's car culture. As the 1960s progressed, Chrysler's designs grew more refined with graceful curves and attention to detail. Their automobiles dominated the market throughout the 1970s, with models like the LeBaron Medallion Coupe and Chrysler Cordoba becoming some of the decade's most memorable cars.

No matter the era, Chryslers featured sleek lines, beautiful cabins and detailed craftsmanship that stood out from competing cars. Their commitment to excellence holds true to this day.

Chrysler Entering the Millennium

Chrysler came under new leadership during the 1990s and marked a renaissance for the brand that bled into the millennium. With a focus on engineering, design and luxury, Chrysler remained a champion for Detroit as the 21st century commenced.

Models like the Chrysler 300C, PT Cruiser and Town & Country minivan took large slices of the market year after year, and combined the style and innovations drivers were looking for during the new millennium.

Looking to the Future

Chrysler is a brand that is uniquely American. As they move into the future, their innovative engineering, beautiful designs and commitment to excellence have set the benchmark for quality across the automotive world.
