Jeep Towing Capacity

When people think of towing, they normally think about pickup trucks. The truth is, however, sport utility vehicles are also rated for towing and hauling, and these can deliver outstanding performance depending on the individual vehicle.

Jeep is known for its history of hard-performing, off-road, intense vehicles, and there are currently seven in the lineup, each with its own ratings and performance. If you're in Scotus, Wayne County, or Ontario and are interested in how your new Jeep will perform, read the statistics and performance factors that go into determining Jeep towing capacity for various vehicles, and learn where to take a test drive today.

Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass is a Class I light-duty SUV with an available trailer tow package on certain trim levels. At the Sport and Latitude 4x2 trims, towing is not recommended. However, the Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited 4x4 trims, each powered by a 2.4L inline-four Tigershark engine, are all rated to town up to 2,000 pounds.

Jeep Cherokee

One of Jeep's better known vehicles, just about every trim level at its basic package is rated for towing 2,000 pounds both with front- and four-wheel drive. At the Latitude, Limited, Trailhawk, Sport, and Overland levels with a 3.2L Pentastar V6 engine option, a trailer tow package is also available which increases maximum towing to 4,500 pounds.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

This larger SUV is one of Jeep's powerhouse performers. The basic maximum towing rating with the Trailer Tow Group is 6,200 pounds at the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, or up to 7,200 pounds with a 5.7L or 6.4L V8 HEMI option. The tow group is standard on the Trailhawk and the Overland and Summit 4x4s at the V6 level (and optional on the Laredo, Limited, and the Overland and Summit 4x2s). It's also available on the Class IV Extra Heavy Duty SRT vehicle.

Jeep Patriot

The Jeep Patriot is a Class I light-duty vehicle that does not offer the option for a trailer tow group. With a base 2.0L inline-four engine, it can tow up to 1,000 pounds maximum. Stepping up to the 172 horsepower engine at the Latitude, High Altitude or Sport trims, raises this to 2,000 pounds.

Jeep Renegade

With the Jeep Renegade, using the base 1.4L Turbo engine, towing is not recommended by the manufacturer. Stepping up to the 2.4L Tigershark engine, however, nets you 180 horsepower and there are available towing packages, which will give you up to 2,000 pounds of towing capacity.

Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler is the classic Jeep-the original model that has been in service since soldiers in WWII counted upon it for heavy work. It offers some of the best standard towing among all Jeep models except for the high-end Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. At all levels, when equipped with the available Trailer Tow Group, this model can haul up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity. This goes for both the standard Wrangler and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited models.
