Ram outdid themselves with the latest Ram 1500 model, and subsequently all other pickups in its class. When properly equipped, this truck offers best-in-class V8 towing, maxing out at 12,750 pounds. As if that wasn’t enough, this truck can also handle a maximum payload capacity of 2,300 pounds, so you never have to hesitate to load it up with cargo.
Even the lower trim levels offer towing capacities that set this truck apart from the competition. If you don’t optimize this truck for towing in any way, you can still tow up to 6,250 pounds. You don’t even have to opt for the V8 engine to get impressive towing capacity, as the V6 can offer 7,730 pounds of towing capacity at best.
There are three distinct engines available for the 2019 Ram 1500, and they all feature something that optimizes towing a bit.
- 3.6-liter Pentastar® V6 that offers 305 horsepower with 269 lb-ft of torque and 7,730-pound towing capacity
- 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine offers 11,610-pound towing capacity
If you want to push your towing capacity all the way to that maximum 12,750 pounds, you’ll need the top level engine. The most powerful engine takes the 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 and outfits it with eTorque technology. While it still maintains the same 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque as its regular counterpart, the eTorque add-on can offer a supplemental 130 lb-ft of torque. It’s that extra boost that brings torque to a grand total of 540 lb-ft.
Towing is about brute strength in a lot of ways, but that’s not all there is to it. The Ram 1500 was also redesigned to be more aerodynamic than ever before, making it easier for this truck to cut through the air no matter how much its towing behind it. In fact, the new Ram 1500 has the lowest frontal drag coefficient in its class.
The Air Suspension System makes it particularly easy to tow cargo down the highway. When you approach highway speeds, this system will lower the truck, reducing drag even further. This system also works to keep the load level, which makes it easier to maintain control of your payload.
